Engines with higher compression require higher octane number fuels. The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating. When you can control the point at which the fuel ignites, the maximum & improved performance of the engine can be achieved with the elimination of power robbing knocking and pinging due to low octane fuel.
